Woronora Water Treatment Plant
The Illawarra and Woronora Water Treatment Plants provide high quality drinking water to more than 500,000 people on behalf of Sydney Water. The two plants have a combined production capacity of 370 million litres per day.
The Illawarra Plant, with a capacity to produce 210 million litres of water per day, began operating in December 1996. This plant also has a hydro-electric facility enabling it to be entirely self sufficient in energy and to export surplus energy to the grid.
The Woronora Plant commenced operations in April 1997 and produces 160 million litres of water per day with the potential to be upgraded to 220 million litres per day.
Veolia Water's technical division, Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies, provided the process design for the plants.
Today, Veolia Water operates and maintains these plants as part of a build-own-operate contract.
